The Custom Cabinetry Process

The Process – From Vision to Installation

Coastal Woodenworks provides a comprehensive and expert experience. From initial consultation and design, through precision manufacturing and flawless installation, you will have friendly, knowledgeable support at every step.

Bringing a client’s vision to life starts with understanding their needs and style. Coastal Woodenworks gathers inspiration through meetings, using descriptions, photos or reference images to create a design that balances beauty and function. If clients work with designers, we collaborate to refine layouts and select appropriate materials. Detailed cost and timeline estimates provide clarity before fabrication begins.

Coastal Woodenworks creates detailed 3D drawings with precise measurements to help clients visualize their cabinetry. By taking exact dimensions of the project environment, we create a digital model that replicates the space, ensuring accuracy and minimizing errors. The design remains flexible during this phase, allowing clients to request adjustments to layout, materials and finishes.

Construction begins in the Coastal Woodenworks cabinetry shop, where each drawer and cabinet are methodically handcrafted. Finishes are then applied and cabinet parts are assembled before installation begins. A final walk-through with the client will confirm satisfaction. Regular updates on scheduling, material selection and installation expectations keep everything on track for smooth workflow and on-time completion.

Clients can count on clear, responsive communication throughout. Most builds take four to twelve weeks, depending on complexity. A one-project-at-a-time approach and careful planning ensure a smooth transition from concept to completion.

Design Philosophy

Collaboration is fundamental at Coastal Woodenworks. Working closely with clients or their designers, we develop a plan that looks good and works well. Every cabinetry project starts with a detailed 3D drawing, allowing clients to “see” the design and make adjustments before fabrication begins. Multiple conversations ensure the final product aligns with both practical needs and personal style, always within budget considerations.

Functionality is the foundation of every project. A well-thought-out layout improves efficiency and enhances daily use. Poor kitchen cabinet design can turn simple tasks into frustrating chores – cabinets that block sightlines, awkwardly placed storage or difficult to access shelves. Every space is analyzed to identify and resolve any issues, ensuring form follows function.

Customization is key, but never at the expense of structural integrity. Clients are guided through design decisions with honest, practical advice. When a design choice impacts functionality, solutions are explored to keep both practicality and aesthetic appeal. Whether rethinking kitchen storage options, optimizing built-in cabinets or adjusting entryway layouts, every suggestion is made with long-term serviceability in mind.

Sustainability is built into every process. Meticulous planning minimizes material waste, a stark contrast to industry norms where excess plywood is often discarded. Every cut is optimized to reduce waste and lower costs for clients. High-quality materials like birch plywood are used for durable, long-lasting cabinetry – no melamine or particle board here.

When we renovated our 120-year-old Cumberland house, we needed someone to build modern cabinets that preserved the feel of an older heritage home. Ross was easy to work with and understood what we wanted. Everything worked out great, and we’re really happy with Ross’s work.
